Ingredients:

  • Bread, Slices 2 each
  • Butter, Softened 1 tablespoon
  • Cheese, Slices 2 each
  • Ham, Deli, Slices 2 each

Instruction:

  1. Preheat your Blackstone Flat Top Griddle. If using a gas Blackstone griddle, turn your burner on medium heat. With an electric Blackstone griddle (e-series), set the dial to 400°F.
  2. Butter one side of both your slices of bread with a thin even layer.
  3. Build your ham and cheese sandwich before you place it on top the flat top. Start by laying one of the buttered slices of bread face down on your work surface so the butter side is on the bottom and the un-buttered side is facing up. Add a layer of cheese on top of the bread. Next, add a layer of the ham to your sandwich. Top the ham with another layer of cheese. Finally, place the second slice of bread on top of the stack so that the buttered side of the bread is up.
  4. Once the Blackstone griddle is hot, place the assembled sandwich so the bottom buttered layer of bread is on top of the griddle grill.
  5. Cook the ham and cheese sandwich for about 3 to 5 minutes until the bread is golden brown. Use a dome lid or your griddle cover to help with the melting process. Do not let the sandwich burn!
  6. Flip the ham grilled cheese sandwich over and continue cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes until the second side golden brown. Remove from the Blackstone griddle when done and serve hot. If desired, cut into pieces. Pair with your favorite soup or side dish.

FAQ

Is grilled cheese better with butter or mayo?

The cheese that goes best with ham is Swiss cheese, which is what I usually use. Smoked Gouda is delicious and ideal for a more “grown-up” party sandwich. Cheddar and ham go wonderfully together, but it doesn’t melt as well, so I avoid using it in this recipe.

Is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich healthy?

We still prefer traditional butter, but if there’s no softened butter on your counter, do reach for the mayo; you’ll be pretty happy with the results for sure. Mayonnaise is more convenient and produces a nicer texture on the outside of a grilled cheese sandwich, but the taste is not ideal.
