One of my favorite plant proteins is grilled Tempeh because it is high in protein and absorbs flavors to make the ideal vegan meat for grilling. I always prepare grilled Tempeh and use a variety of marinades to complement the dishes I’m serving.
For instance, the Vegan Tempeh Reuben is marinated with a mixture of pickle juice, beet juice, and spices, whereas my BBQ Tempeh sandwich is marinated with Healthy BBQ Sauce.
Alternatively, Tempeh Kabobs are marinated in a homemade teriyaki sauce made from real pineapple. Grilling tempeh is my preferred method of preparing it.
Tempeh, a soy product similar to tofu, is made from fermented soybeans and is formed into a dense-like cake. Although Tempeh is a soy-based product, it frequently contains grains, beans, and flavoring. Tempeh is less processed than tofu and has a nutty flavor, but it is sometimes overlooked because people don’t know how to cook it. If done properly, however, Tempeh is a great, healthy meat substitute.
Tempeh occasionally receives a bad rap, but once cooked properly, you’ll fall in love with it as much as I do. It’s high in protein and less processed than tofu.
Tempeh, for example, is naturally bitter and a little tough, so it does not absorb the marinade and instead acquires a BBQ grill flavor without being boiled first.
Yes, I did say that. After being boiled for 10 minutes, tempeh loses its bitterness and becomes a sponge for marinades.
The next step is to take the tempeh out of the package, cut it in half to create two equal-sized squares, and then put the pieces in a pan with water, bring to a boil, cook for 10 minutes, then remove the tempeh to marinate.

FAQ
How do you cook tempeh so it tastes good?
In this recipe, I use a simple marinade of tamari or soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, olive oil, and sriracha. Steam the cubes for 10 minutes, and whisk together a marinade while they cook. Steaming tempeh before baking or grilling it helps it soak up a marinade and infuse it with extra flavor.
How do you cook tempeh so it’s not bitter?
Tempeh has a strong, nutty flavor and a tendency to take on the flavors of any food or sauce to which it is added, making it a versatile option for many different types of dishes, from sandwiches and tacos to stews and chili.
How do you cook pre packaged tempeh?
Sliced tempeh should be placed in a saucepan with water or vegetable broth; bring liquid to a boil; reduce heat; and simmer for 10 minutes if you find that the tempeh is too bitter right out of the package.
